Australia’s Border Opening On 1 December 2021

The Department of Home Affairs has announced today that people who hold eligible visas and who are fully vaccinated will be able to enter Australia from 1 December 2021 without the need for an entry exemption. Quarantine requirements still apply as per each State or Territory on arrival. The resumption of international travel Australia is part of the third phase of the national reopening plan.

Summary of the requirements

  • The traveller must be fully vaccinated against COVID -19. The vaccine must be approved or recognized by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
  • The traveller must hold one of the eligible visa subclasses
  • The traveller must provide proof of their vaccination status
  • The traveller must present a negative COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test taken within three days of departure

The Australian government announced that as of 1 December 2021, fully vaccinated citizens from Japan and the Republic of Korea who holds an Australian visa will be able to international travel Australia from their home country quarantine-free to participating states and territories, without needing to seek a travel exemption.

What are the entry requirements for citizens of Japan and the Republic of Korea?

  • The traveller under the new ruling must depart from their home country; and
  • Be fully vaccinated with a vaccine recognized and approved by the TGA
  • Hold a valid Australian visa
  • Provide proof of their vaccination status
  • Present a negative COVID-19 PRC test taken within three days of departure.
