Australia To Ease Some International Travel Restrictions

This article provides an update on International Travel Restrictions and the latest developments in relation to travelling to and from Australia.

What is New?

On 1 October 2021, the Australian Government announced that in order to enable fully vaccinated Australian citizens or permanent residents aged 12 and over to travel, it has some plans which will be implemented in the coming months, most likely in November 2021. The plan will be implemented on a phased basis.

What is different in this new plan?

Under the proposed plan, in the first phase, vaccinated Australian citizens or permanent residents need not meet the previous eligibility requirements to apply for an exemption to leave or travel to Australia. These requirements were introduced in response to the COVID pandemic.

Are there any exemptions to the first phase?

Yes. Children under 12 and those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons will also be able to travel overseas without an exemption.

Am I still subject to the travel quarantine if I am fully vaccinated?

The short answer is yes, however, under the new plan to be implemented, the government proposes seven day home quarantine for returning Australian citizens and permanent residents who are fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved for use in Australia or recognized by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The 14-day managed quarantine (at traveler’s own expense) will remain in place for anyone not vaccinated with a vaccine approved or recognized by the TGA.
