How to Leave Your Christmas Party with Your Dignity (And Job)

Christmas is coming..(Leave Your Christmas Party)..and while the staff is jolly, HR departments are shaking at the knees facing the impending Office Christmas Party. So here’s your guide to avoid post-party problems and steer well clear of a discrimination claim.

  1. Don’t drink too much.  We all know that staff member that had a few too many at last year’s office party… and proceeded to take three days sick leave. Know your limits and when to stop.
  2. Dress appropriately. Even at a Christmas party always aim to present yourself professionally.
  3. Your rad dance moves are unlikely to impress. The nut bush died with the Disco Era. Similarly, no one can ‘shake it like Beyonce, except Beyonce. Keep it tame on the dance floor.
  4. Keep your jokes PG rated. Sexual comments, racist remarks, and humiliating co-workers will never be funny.
  5. Stay away from the mistletoe. Although you may become utterly irresistible after a few drinks, what you may view as friendly chatting or harmless flirting may be considered sexual harassment by your co-worker.

Remember, you are attending a work event, so stay in line with your company’s anti-harassment and equal opportunity policies. Furthermore, keep in mind that courts have ruled post-party happenings are an extension to the workplace with work standards applying.
